The Legend Of Shangri-La Cluster Pays Slot Review
NetEnt likes to create series of slots that share similar themes or features. They have multiple slots called Fairytale Legends as well as a few slots that have ‘Cluster Pays’ in their name. Well, there are a few since September, when a second game in the series was released. The previous Aloha! Cluster Pays was a success, but we believe that the more recent title is even more so. In this The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays slot review, we’ll tell you exactly why we think so.
The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays slot is quite unusual unless you’ve played Aloha! Cluster Pays before. The game has six reels with five lines each. There are no traditional paylines. Just as it states in its name, it’s clusters of the same symbols that pay instead. At least nine adjacent symbols have to form a cluster to count as a win.
Small wins like these are the most frequent, though it’s possible to fill the grid with the same symbol. As a result, clusters of up to 30 symbols are possible. Such clusters are, of course, very lucrative. The maximum that you can get from the lowest symbol is 200x your bet! The maximum win is 1,000x your bet or, with the maximum bet, £200,000.
As we will see from the special features, getting the grid filled with the same symbols is very much possible. There are only seven different symbols, and they usually come in stacks. All of the symbols are theme-based and pretty. You won’t see things like card suits, Js, Qs or Ks.
Starting from the simplest features, there’s a wild symbol in the reels too. It appears in stacks in the base game and there’s a random feature related to it too. The feature is called random substitutions and may activate at any time when two clusters of the same symbols are present. The monk will magically make one or more wilds appear adjacent to the clusters. This will often connect them to multiply your win.
A similar random feature sometimes activates when two non-winning clusters of the same symbols are on the grid. They will become sticky and the remaining symbols will spin again. These sticky re-spins will continue as long as at least one additional symbol of the same kind lands anywhere. This is a great way to reach that 30-symbol win.
But that’s not all. There are also scatter symbols, occupying two lines instead of one. If you land three of them, but some are only halfway in, the reels will nudge to reveal them in full and activate the bonus round as a result. Three scatters will award five extra spins and each additional scatter will give one extra spin, up to the maximum of eight spins.
The bonus round itself has a unique feature too. During each spin, from two to six wilds will be added on the grid in random places. Then, after each spin, from one to four of these wilds will be removed. A chilly wind in the form of a dragon will blow each time, freezing the symbols that are going to stay for the next spin.
The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays slot is a prime example of a NetEnt product. Visual and sound effects aside, the gameplay is simple yet fun. Although playing it for a long time may eventually become boring, the software will stand firm to the end. It runs without a flaw and remains smooth for hours. It’s quick and light even on mobile, assuming your device isn’t five years old.
Since it belongs to a series of games, we can’t say that the cluster mechanism is unique. Compared to Aloha, however, this is a more balanced slot. It has features that are more lucrative and, plainly, make this game better. With a progression such as this, it would make sense to think that the third Cluster Pays installment will be the best! But let’s get back to this review.
We can’t say the game’s theme is unique either because it clearly isn’t. In the end, what makes this slot special is not a single fantastic feature, but a cluster of decent features. The quality of gameplay and its features, the graphics and the payouts all make The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays slot worth to remember.
If you like long sessions on slots, The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays slot is a good choice. It’s relatively easy to play with a limited budget. The monk mascot makes the game much more lively. Most importantly, the random features add the possibility to turn each non-winning round into an exciting win.
Alternatively, this game is the kind of slot that you go for when all the classic ones with regular paylines start feeling the same. So, if that’s the case with you, why not try something new?
